The opening match of IPL 2025, featuring defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is at risk due to heavy rain expected in Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “orange alert,” warning of rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds until Saturday.

In the days leading up to the match, Kolkata has already seen intermittent showers. A KKR intra-squad practice match was even cut short after just one innings due to rain. However, despite light showers on Wednesday and Thursday, both teams were able to complete their practice sessions.

The match is set to start at 7:30 PM on March 22 at Eden Gardens, with the toss scheduled for 7:00 PM. According to IPL rules, an extra hour of play can be added to accommodate delays, and at least a five-over match per side must be completed before midnight. If the game is called off due to bad weather, both teams will be awarded one point each.

An opening ceremony is also planned before the match, featuring performances by popular artists. However, the bad weather could disrupt these celebrations as well.

After this match, KKR will face Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 26, while RCB will take on Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on March 28. Fans and organizers are keeping a close eye on the weather, hoping for clear skies so that the tournament can kick off as planned.
