Mumbai Indians’ left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar etched his name in history as the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut, achieving the feat against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium.

“I felt really good. There was some pressure initially, but the team’s atmosphere helped me stay relaxed,” the 23-year-old told the host broadcaster at the innings break after KKR were bowled out for 116.

Mumbai Indians’ left-arm seamer Ashwani Kumar had a dream IPL debut, making history as the first Indian bowler to take a four-wicket haul in his maiden match. Bought for INR 30 lakh at the mega auction, the 23-year-old showcased his talent against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, playing a key role in restricting them to just 116 runs.

Despite his impressive performance, Ashwani admitted to feeling the weight of expectations before the match. So intense was his nervousness that he skipped lunch, managing to eat only a banana before stepping onto the field for the evening game, which began at 7:30 PM. “I didn’t have anything for lunch, just a banana. There was a little pressure. I wasn’t feeling hungry,” he revealed. “But still, I played well, so it’s good.”

His debut couldn’t have started on a better note. Bowling the first delivery of his IPL career, Ashwani struck immediately, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, who was caught at deep point. He continued to make an impact in his second over, sending Rinku Singh back in a similar fashion. The young pacer then rattled Manish Pandey’s stumps just three balls later, further strengthening Mumbai Indians’ grip on the game. In his third over, he bowled a well-set Andre Russell for just 5, ending with impressive figures of 4 for 24 in his three overs.

Although the MI team management had strategized for Ashwani’s debut, their primary advice was to enjoy the occasion and bowl freely. “We had plans. But [Hardik Pandya, MI captain] said that since it’s your debut match, enjoy yourself. Just keep bowling the way you have been,” Ashwani shared.

One of the defining moments of his spell came when he was up against the explosive Andre Russell. The West Indian powerhouse managed to hit Ashwani for a boundary off the first ball of his third over. However, the young seamer kept his composure, adjusting his lengths strategically. He followed up with two sharp short deliveries before delivering a full one that completely deceived Russell, leading to his dismissal. “Yes, the captain did have a role. Hardik bhai had told me that he will try to attack you,” Ashwani explained. “He told me to bowl into his body. But the situation was such that he tried to hit me and got out.”

Despite his outstanding spell, Ashwani didn’t get a chance to complete his four-over quota, as KKR were bundled out in just 16.2 overs. However, his impact was undeniable, playing a crucial role in setting up Mumbai Indians’ first victory of the season. His sensational debut not only gave MI a much-needed boost but also signaled the arrival of a promising new fast bowler in Indian cricket.
